About divewindow.app
divewindow.app is a dive-trip planner and daily forecast of sea conditions, with deep coverage of Latin America and global expansion.
How the dive-ability score works
The 0–100 score combines six components with calibrated weights (penalty-points model from VIZ.net.au + Morrison 2021):
- Estimated visibility (30 pts) — derived from 7-day cumulative rainfall, rolling swell, satellite chlorophyll-a and per-site sedimentation factor.
- Swell (25 pts) — significant height + period. Long-period groundswell amplifies impact.
- Season (15 pts) — comparison with the per-site curated optimal / to-avoid months.
- Current (15 pts) — scaled against the site baseline.
- Wind (10 pts) — affects entry, surface comfort and water mixing.
- Tide (5 pts) — only for sites with strong tidal sensitivity (Bocas, Golfo San Matías, etc.).
Data sources
- Open-Meteo Marine — swell, wind, currents, sea-surface temperature, tide (no API key).
- Copernicus Marine Service — chlorophyll-a (visibility proxy), currents at depth. Attribution required.
- NOAA CPC Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) — monthly ENSO phase.
- NOAA Coral Reef Watch — bleaching alerts (integration in progress).
- Sites curated from Parques Nacionales Naturales (CO, AR), CONANP (MX), SINAC (CR), MiAmbiente (PA), ICMBio (BR), Galápagos National Park Directorate (EC), Belize Audubon Society, and verified operators.
Known limitations
- Real visibility depends on factors that can't be observed by satellite (local turbidity, prior-day diver traffic). The score is indicative, not deterministic.
- Per-site directional exposure vectors (
exposure_vector,lee_vector) are not fully populated yet — the current score uses absolute thresholds. Per-site calibration is in phase 5. - Some coordinates are approximated to zone/island level. Public sources rarely publish exact GPS for dive sites. Operator verification is in progress.

How divewindow.app is funded
The project is supported by affiliate links to lodging platforms (Booking.com), tours (GetYourGuide) and eventually dive gear. If you book or buy through them, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Editorial commitment: curated sites, scores and forecasts are not modified under partner pressure. Affiliate links are tagged affiliate next to the CTA. If a partner doesn't meet our criteria (greenwashing, predatory practices toward marine life, missing insurance), we drop them without warning — even if it means losing the commission.
